Transforming Mental Health: A Conversation with Murphy, Founder of ‘That’s Mental Mate’

In this interview, I sit down with Murphy, the founder of ‘That’s Mental Mate,’ a charity dedicated to providing mental health support throughout the UK. Murphy shares his personal journey, the motivation behind starting the organization in Calderdale, and his vision for the future. Learn more below about his passion for mental health advocacy and the vital work being done to help those in need.

Murphy, what inspired you to start ‘That’s Mental Mate’ and how did the journey begin in Calderdale?

I’ve suffered from mental health issues all of my life from addiction to ADHD and PTSD. Having to go through the system many times, I’ve seen just what damage it can do to someone when they have to repeat themselves over and over again, dragging up the same traumatic stories. I’ve also seen that you can get passed from pillar to post when trying to find the specific help you’re looking for. I live in Brighouse, so starting in Calderdale just made the most sense but we do have all 317 local authorities all ready to go on the website.

What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about mental health and the work you’re doing with ‘That’s Mental Mate’?

That you don’t need to go through it alone. It can feel very lonely at times but we’ll be here to guide you through.

What are some of the long-term goals for ‘That’s Mental Mate,’ and how do you plan to achieve them?

I aim for TMM to be known UK wide and be a go to place for anything mental health. I would like it to be a name that, when mentioned, makes people sit up, take notice, and do their job properly. Mental health is a serious subject and deserves to be taken seriously.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone struggling with mental health right now, what would it be?

Reach out. It doesn’t have to be to us but just reach out. If you get turned away, reach out again and keep reaching out until somebody helps you. We will ALWAYS help you without you having to ask twice if we can.

Murphy self funds his charity, 'That’s Mental Mate,' and is in need of the financial support of others to maintain the valuable services he offers. If you are able to contribute, your support would be greatly appreciated and his GoFundMe can be found below!
